NASCLA Commercial General Building Contractor

The NASCLA Accredited Commercial General Building Contractor Exam eliminates the trade examination only for the participating state agencies. Once you have passed an exam within the NASCLA Accredited Examination Program, contractors will still have to meet additional state licensure requirements within each participating state to obtain their license, as well as passing the state specific Business Law exam.

This is a 2 day seminar beginning 8:00am each day. Seminar includes Business and Law.

Application and State Requirements

NASCLA Requirements

  • The first step is to gain pre-approval.
  • Go to the NASCLA National Examination Database: https://ned.nascla.org/.
  • Contractors must submit verification of 2 years of Full-Time experience within the last 5 years and a financial statement.
  • The cost of the exam is $125 and pay a $25 application fee on the left-hand side of your screen. Applications will be processed within 7 business days.
  • Once your application is approved you will receive an email directly from support@psiexams.com.
  • with a link to schedule the exam at one of PSI's locations. Your application is active for 1 year from your date of approval. You will have 3 attempts to pass the examination.
  • After obtaining your NASCLA Candidate ID Number please go to https://candidate.psiexams.com
  • All examinations are scheduled through PSI directly. Once you pass your exam, you will receive a physical copy of your pass score at PSI's testing facility immediately after the exam. This is the only paperwork you will have to show you have taken and passed the exam.
  • Finally, you will need to go back to the NASCLA National Examination Database https://ned.nascla.org/ and create a self-service portal for transcript access. Your electronic transcript will automatically be uploaded within 48 hours.
  • After your account is linked to your pass score you can send a transcript to the agency you are looking to get licenses in. Each transcript is $24.99 and sent electronically from our database to the state agency. There are no copies for download. The state agencies are aware you do not get a physical copy. Please save your confirmation email receipt as proof of purchase for the application process with the state.

State Specific NASCLA Application Information

Administering state agencies are also considered to be accepting state agencies as they both offer the examination for candidates and accept the examination in lieu of their state specific trade portion. Some of the states below offer an either/or option for candidates regarding their state specific trade examination or utilizing the NASCLA Accredited Examination. A state specific Business and Law exam is also required.

Alabama

Accepts NASCLA exam scores passed after 9/2009 and administers NASCLA exam for General Contractors

Arizona

Accepts NASCLA exam scores passed after 11/1/2017 in lieu trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications. Exam date for transcripts must be within the past 2 years

Arkansas

Accepts and Administers the exam in lieu of candidates providing appropriate experience on application

Florida

Accept the NASCLA exam scores for the Florida trade exam only after 3/2019. A Florida Business and Finance portion and Florida Code portion are still required.

Georgia

Accepts and Administers the NASCLA exam as of 11/2010 for the General Commercial Building Contractor.

Louisiana

Accepting the NASCLA scores after 9/2/2016 for both the Residential and Commercial Classifications.

Mississippi

Accepts and Administers the NASCLA exam as of 5/2010 for the General Commercial Building Contractor

Nevada

Accepting the NASCLA scores after 12/2013 for the Commercial Classification

North Carolina

Accepted for both the Commercial Building Construction and the Residential Building Contractor Classifications

Oregon

Accepted in lieu of the 16 hour pre-licensure training requirement

South Carolina

Accepts and Administers the NASCLA exam as of 5/2010 for the General Commercial Building Contractor

Tennessee

Accepted for the Commercial (B) classification only

Utah

As of 5/2019, Utah no longer requires trade exams, but will accept the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors to satisfy the 2 year experience requirements for general contractors.

Virginia

Accepting the NASCLA scores after 1/2016 for the Commercial Building Classification (CBC)

Virgin Islands

Accepts and Administers the NASCLA exam as of 2/2013 for the General Commercial Building Contractor

West Virginia

Accepting NASCLA exam scores taken after 9/1/2013 for the Commercial Classification.
