The National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) has partnered with several industry stakeholders to create one nationally recognized accredited trade examination for electricians. Through administering state agencies, NASCLA offers (3) different open book electrical trade examinations through the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program. They are Electrical Contractors (Master/Unlimited Electricians), Journeyman Electricians and Residential Electrical Contractors (Residential Electricians).

Additional Services

·        NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program's administration process will differ from the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors.

 

·        Candidates and will only be able to take an examination through an administering regulatory agency. It will not be available as a national, stand alone examination through an independent testing provider.

 

·        Candidates must apply with the administering state agency to become approved to take an electrical examination through the program. The candidate must follow all state agency requirements to become licensed.

 

·        Candidates are expected to follow individual state agency applications to become licensed, in addition to taking a business and law examination

·        Electrical candidates must submit verification of 4 years experience under a master or state certified electrical contractor.

·        Must have a minimum of 4 years (8,000 hours) of experience that shows that they have designed, planned laid-out, directly supervised electrical construction activities, and the installation of electrical components. (May substitute 1 year of education in electrical curriculum for ½ year electrical experience for a maximum of 2 years credit of the 4 year requirement).

·        Because applicants must document that they have experience in all aspects of electrical work, they must submit a list of duties for each job held.

·        These employment affidavits must be completed by someone in the Human Resources Department, Co. President, Electrical Contractor, Master Electrician, Electrical Engineer, or Electrical Inspector from previous jobs to qualify as proper experience verification.

States Accepting the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program are Alabama, Arizona, District of Columbia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia

As of this time South Carolina doesn’t require continuing education for this license.

·        The fee for the exam is $125.00

·        The NASCLA National Electrical Contractor Exam has 100 questions and a time limit of 4.5 hours.

·        A 75% is required to pass.

Topics on the exam include General Code Requirements, Project Design & Management, Safety, Electrical Theory & Principles, Wiring & Protection, Wiring Methods & Materials, Special Occupancies, Special Conditions & Equipment and Communication Systems

·        To schedule your exam, you must first obtain pre-approval NASCLA.
