Additional Services

  • Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the exam. The State is the only entity authorized to tell you which test(s) you should take or are qualified to take. Any questions regarding which test(s) to take should be directed to the Board.
  • Applicants are required to pass the Business and Law Management exam.
  • All State level licenses in Mississippi are for projects where the financial level is equal to or greater than $50,000 for public projects and $10,000 for private projects. Licensing for smaller jobs is obtained at the city or county level.
  • There are no minimum experience requirements that have to be met to get the Building Construction (Commercial Contractor -NASCLA Accredited license, however the Board does expect applicants to have experience in the area(s) in which they wish to be licensed and be able to document the experience on their application.
  • Applicants must submit a financial statement that has been reviewed by a CPA that is less than 12 months old showing net worth. Major classifications must have a net worth of at least $50,000 (major classifications are Building, Highway, Streets and Bridges, Heavy Construction, Electrical, Mechanical, and Municipal and Public Works).
  • Applicants must submit proof of workers compensation insurance and also have liability insurance coverage of a minimum of $300,000 per occurrence and $600,000 aggregate for general liability.

The Building Construction (Commercial) Contractor- NASCLA Accredited exam is for a Commercial Contractor License.

The license fee is $200 for the 1st license obtained and $50 each for any additional classifications obtained.

Applications will be reviewed for approval for testing as soon as they are received.

After passing the exams the applicant must submit a completed application to the Board for review. Completed applications must be submitted at least 30 days before the next scheduled meeting to be reviewed at that meeting.

The Board meets 4 times each year in January, April, July, and October.

Successful candidates will receive their Certificate of Responsibility or trade license approximately 1 week after approval by the Board.

NASCLA Accredited license is accepted in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia & the Virgin Islands.

Additionally, West Virginia will accept the NASCLA exam scores for the West Virginia General Contractor, provided the NASCLA exam was passed after 11/1/2013. 

Nevada is also accepting the NASCLA exam scores if the exam was passed after 12/1/2013. This is for the same classification.

As of August 1, 2017, Arizona began accepting this examination in lieu trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications. As of November 21, 2017 Arizona also began administering the NASCLA exam.

As of 3/1/2019, Florida is accepting the NASCLA exam. Scores from the NASCLA exam are now acceptable for the Residential, Building, or General Contractor classifications. Applicants using the NASCLA exam will still be required to pass the Florida Business and Finance exams and meet all other application requirements.

As of this time Mississippi doesn’t require continuing education for this license.

PSI administers the exam.  PSI is a NASCLA approved exam provider, therefore, this is a NASCLA Accredited Exam.

The fee for one exam is $120 and the fee for two exams is $240.

The Business Law exam has 50 multiple-choice questions, a 2-hour time limit and requires 70% to pass.

Exam topics include Licensing requirements, Estimating & Bidding, Tax Laws, Labor Laws, Contracts and more.

The NASCLA Accredited exam for has 115 questions and a time limit of 330 minutes and a 70% is required to pass.

To schedule your exam, you must first obtain pre-approval by submitting experience and education information to the testing company, PSI. Once approved, schedule exams by contacting PSI at (800) 733-9267.

New applicants seeking 1st time licensure will have 6 months from the date of eligibility to take the examination. If you fail, you may retest on an unlimited basis during this 6-month period. If you do not pass within 6 months, you must reapply with the Board.
