A General Building Contractor is a person who’s principal business is in connection with any structures built or being built, to be used for the support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, or moveable property of any kind, requiring in the construction the use of more than two contractor classifications, or a person who supervises the whole or any part of construction. The “General Building Contractor” classification applies to work on both commercial & residential properties.

Additional Services

  • The first step in the licensing process is to pass all required exams. Once the exams are passed, a completed application should be submitted to the State Licensing Board.
  • The Business and Law exam is required in addition to the trade exam.
  • There are no State mandated minimum experience requirements for this license.
  • There are no State mandated financial requirements except for the Wage Bond.
  • The License application fee is $90.00.

    All types of contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. Applicants who have NOT been actively and actually engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years must obtain a Wage Bond covering all employee salaries for four weeks at full production. Exceptions to the Wage Bond requirement are contractors that are only performing Residential work and those who have been actively engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years.

NASCLA Accredited license is accepted in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia & the Virgin Islands. 

Additionally, West Virginia will accept the NASCLA exam scores for the West Virginia General Contractor, provided the NASCLA exam was passed after 11/1/2013. 

Nevada is also accepting the NASCLA exam scores if the exam was passed after 12/1/2013. This is for the same classification. Passing the State Specific Business Law exam is still required, as well as meeting each states experience requirements.

As of August 1, 2017, Arizona began accepting this examination in lieu trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications. As of November 21, 2017 Arizona also began administering the NASCLA exam

As of 3/1/2019, Florida is accepting the NASCLA exam. Scores from the NASCLA exam are now acceptable for the Residential, Building, or General Contractor classifications. Applicants using the NASCLA exam will still be required to pass the Florida Business and Finance exams and meet all other application requirements.


 

West Virginia does not currently require Continuing Education for the General Building Contractor at this time.

NOTICE: CHANGE IN TESTING AGENT

Effective September 1, 2024, the Testing Agent for the Contractor Licensing Board (CLB) and Division of Labor (DOL) is Prov.

  • The Business Law exam is also required in order to obtain this license.
  • Prov administers the exam and a 70% is required to pass.
  • It is an open book timed test with 80 questions and a 3-hour time limit.
  • The exam fee is $59.95 per exam.
  • Out of state testing is available for an additional fee

    Exam topics include: Estimating and Plan Reading, Sitework, Concrete, Masonry, Structural Steel, Carpentry, Roofing, Doors, Windows and Stairs, Interior Finishes, Exterior Finishes and Safety.

American Contractors Exam Services offers an extensive 1½ day seminar to prepare you for the General Building Contractor license exam as well as the required Business Law exam.
