All types of Contractors must take this exam. This license can stand-alone as the only exam needed for some smaller Specialty Licenses that do not require an additional trade exam. All other Contractor applicants are required to pass this exam in addition to their trade exam in order to obtain a Contractors license.

Additional Services

**As of May 2019, Utah no longer requires trade exams, but will accept the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors to satisfy the 2 year experience requirements for general contractors.

Specialty Contractors must complete a 25-hour pre-licensure course.

General Contractors must complete 30-hour pre-licensing course.

Have your Business registered with the state and must have obtained a general liability insurance certificate with minimum required coverage of $100,000 for each incident and $300,000 in total that covers and where DOPL is listed as certificate holder.

Experience Requirement:

 Two (2) years of experience in the construction industry.  This experience must be at least 4,000 hours (or 2 years) of paid work experience at any time in your life in the construction industry. You must self-certify that you have this experience.

The other ways to satisfy the experience requirement (pick one):

Qualifier on current or previous Utah Contractor License for at least 2 years

Construction Management Degree (2 or 4 year Degree)

Licensed Utah Professional Engineer

Passed NASCLA Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors

Utah does have reciprocity for several Contractor Classifications. Please contact us for more information.

Business Law is the only required exam.

Trade exams are no longer required, application for classification only:

B100 General Building Contractor

E100 General Engineering Contractor

R100 Residential & Small Commercial Contractor

E200 General Electrical Contractor*

E201 Residential Electrical Contractor*

P200 General Plumbing Contractor*

P201 Residential Plumbing Contractor*

 

A Contractor Licensee is obligated to complete six hours of continuing education each licensing period. Three hours must be "core" education and the remaining three may be "core" or "professional" related. All courses must be approved by DOPL to be acceptable.

Beginning with the 2017 renewal, no more than three hours may be taken online. At least three hours must be in a live seminar.

Utah Business & Law Exam:

Apply directly with the authorized exam provider. 

One (1) year of licensed experience working in another State, District or Territory of the U.S. in the similar scope of practice sought in Utah, if the license is currently active and in good standing.

Qualifier on Utah Contractor License prior to May 9, 2017
