An approved 20-hour pre-licensure course is required for all contractors. It is increasing to 25-hours on 11/30/17.
* A minimum of four years of full-time experience within the past 10 years, two years of which must be in a supervisory or managerial position. A 4-year Bachelor’s Degree or a 2-year Associate Degree in Construction Management may count as 1-year credit toward supervisory or managerial experience.
*On the license application, candidates will be required to show financial responsibility.

*Depending on the way a Contractor’s business is established, the State may require General Liability, Worker’s Compensation and Unemployment Insurance. The minimum General Liability Insurance is typically $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 in total.
General Building Contractor means a person licensed as a building contractor qualified by education, training, experience, and knowledge to perform or superintend the construction of structures for the support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels, or moveable property of any kind. A General Building Contractor may NOT engage in the performance of a construction specialty specifically identified by rule, in which there is represented a substantial risk to the public health, safety, and welfare and for which a license is required unless that general building contractor holds a valid license in that specialty classification. A General Building Contractor, when performing work defined under the classification: Residential & Small Commercial Contractor", is under the restrictions defined under this classification.

The General Contractor licensing fee is $210. To add an additional Specialty license the fee is $110. All licenses expire on November 30, every even numbered year. In order to renew this license, 6 hours of Continuing Education is required every two-year period. Three hours must be core education (Business and Law) and three hours trade education.
PROCESSING TIME: In-State applications will be processed in 1-2 weeks. Out-of-State applications will have to be reviewed by the Board, which meets once per month and can take 4-6 weeks to process.

NASCLA Accredited license is accepted in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia & the Virgin Islands.
Additionally, West Virginia will accept the NASCLA exam scores for the West Virginia General Contractor, provided the NASCLA exam was passed after 11/1/2013.
Nevada is also accepting the NASCLA exam scores if the exam was passed after 12/1/2013. This is for the same classification.
As of August 1, 2017, Arizona began accepting this examination in lieu trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications. As of November 21, 2017 Arizona also began administering the NASCLA exam.
RECIPROCITY: The state of Utah has reciprocity agreements with Arizona, California, Nevada, and South Carolina for this license.

The exam is give by PSI. It is 80 questions, 3hrs and a 70% is required to pass.
The exam is semi-open book. Only the Residential Code and Building Code with Utah Amendments are allowed into the exam. The other references listed were used to create the exam questions and it is recommended that you are familiar with them.
Topics include: Sitework, Concrete, Masonry, Metals, Carpentry, Thermal and Moisture Protection, Doors and Windows, Drywall & Finishes, Safety, General Code, Plan Reading & Estimating, Roofing, Sewer & Septic, Blue Stake.
