The references listed below are not permitted to be taken into the examination, however these materials are used to create the exams. We highly recommend you use these reference materials to study and prepare yourself for the exam. Please contact us for a detailed listing. Work Experience Required for Class A (Master Electrician) License
A licensed Journeyman Electrician applying for a Class A (Master Electrician) license shall meet the following eligibility criteria for licensure:
(a) furnish documentary proof satisfactory to the Board of having completed at least one year of experience as the holder of a Massachusetts Class B (Journeyman Electrician) license and having been actively engaged in electrical work.
(b) For the purposes of licensure as a Master Electrician, an applicant whose experience is limited to installing fire warning, security or inherently power limited systems shall not be considered a qualified applicant.
13.02: Education Requirements for Class A (Master Electrician) License
(1) A licensed Journeyman Electrician applying for a Class A (Master Electrician) license shall meet the following eligibility criteria for licensure:
(a) furnish documentary proof satisfactory to the Board of having successfully completed without substantial interruption and with the same provider 150 clock hours of classroom instruction, as described in 237 CMR 22.00 based on the current, or if applicable, the preceding Code before making an application for examination.
(b) For the purposes of licensure as a Master Electrician, an applicant whose education is limited to fire warning, security, or inherently power limited systems objectives shall not be considered a qualified applicant.
(2) Applicants who have education, work experience and/or licenses in another state or jurisdiction (other than those with reciprocity with Massachusetts), may be eligible for a waiver of this education requirement if determined by the Board by 237 CMR 13.11, 13.12, and 13.13.
Master Electrician/Contractor is a person, firm, or corporation having a regular place of business who, by the employment of journeymen or apprentices, performs the work of installing, repairing or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, fire warning or security system purposes; provided, however, that no journeyman electrician so employed shall have more than one apprentice under his supervision; and provided, further, that not more than one such apprentice shall be employed for each journeyman electrician purposes. The Master may also do electrical work himself.

The State of Massachusetts presently has reciprocity agreements with New Hampshire.
Massachusetts requires 21 Hours of continuing education on the current National Electrical Code updates every three years.
A company called PSI gives the exams. It is a two-part, open-book exam with a preset time limit. Part I of the exam is the trade exam. It has 80 questions and a 4-hour time limit. Part II of the exam is the Business and Law Exam, it is completely separate from the trade exam and specific details about that exam can be found under that listing. A score of at least 70% is required to pass the exam. The cost of the trade exam is $80.
