THE FOLLOWING ARE EXEMPT AND DO NOT NEED A LICENSE TO DO ELECTRICAL WORK: *Electrical Utilities and their employees *Maintenance workers doing routine maintenance *Homeowners or farmers working on their own property *Retailers installing appliances *Workers in coal mines or coal preparation plants *Workers installing or repairing low-voltage telecommunications systems *Manufacturers installing medical equipment As of July 15, 2004 the state of Kentucky requires individuals conducting electrical work or electrical contracting to obtain a state license. There are three types of statewide electrical licenses available at this time.

EXPERIENCE:Applicants must have 6 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade AND a training course in electrical work OR an additional 2 years of verifiable experience Applicants must pass an exam to obtain this statewide Master Electrician license.

Applications must be completed and sent to the Board with experience documentation, passing exam scores, a current photo and $100 fee.  

Once processed and approved, your license will be mailed in 3 to 5 business days.  Renewal fee is $100.

Kentucky will consider reciprocity on an individual basis.

Master Electricians must complete 6 hours of Continuing Education each year in order to renewal their license.

The testing company is ICC. The exam is an open-book test containing 100 questions and a 5 hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass. The cost of the exam is $100
