Required Books 

 The references listed below are permitted to be taken into the examination. These references may be tabbed (with permanent index tabs) and highlighted. They are available for purchase from our online contractor’s bookstore or by calling our office at 1-800-992-1910.

The Modern Refrigeration & Air Conditioning book currently available is the 20th edition.  KY (ICC) testing centers are only allowing older editions (18th & 19th). These may be found used however the current edition available from the publisher is the 20th. We recommend you try and obtain an older edition.

The Journeyman is not required to take the Business and Law exam.

Pre-approval is not required, the first step in the licensing process is to pass the required exam. A completed application with fees is submitted to the state licensing board once the exam has been passed.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and document 2 years of experience. Credit is given only for experience occurring after January 1, 1990 and it must be experience under the supervision of a licensed contractor. Trade education may be substituted for a maximum of one year of experience.

There are no state mandated financial requirements for this license at this time.

The application fee is $50.00.

Applications will be processed within 60 days of the date they are received.

Currently, the only state with which the Commonwealth of Kentucky has a reciprocal agreement is Ohio. If you possess a valid Ohio Mechanical Contractor license, you may be eligible to reciprocate with Kentucky to obtain a Kentucky Master and Journeyman HVAC license without meeting certain requirements. For more information, contact our office.
License holders must take 6 hours of Continuing Education in order to renew their license.
The testing company is ICC. The exam is an open-book, timed test with 60 questions and a 3-hour time limit. The testing fee is $100.
