A-11 Steel and Aluminum Erection – Field fabrication, erection, repair, and alteration of architectural and structural steel and aluminum materials common to the industry, including field layout, cutting, assembly and erection by welding, bolting, wire typing or riveting.


R-17 Structural Steel and Aluminum – Installation and repair of architectural and structural shapes and members common to the industry, including reinforcing steel which may be used as structural members for buildings, equipment, and structures.


The trade test is considered equivalent for these classifications and upon passing the CBME and trade exam, either license classification may be applied for without further testing.

For Code questions, the examinations will be based only on the edition of the Code book that is listed.

Applicants are required to have 4 years of verifiable experience and must pass the Arizona Business Management Exam in addition to the A-12 (CR-80) exam.

All Contractors are required to obtain bonds. The amount is based on the license classification and the yearly work volume.

The Business Management exam is also required.

The A-11 / R-17  exam is 50 questions, multiple-choice with a 2-hour time limit.

The exam is semi open-book with 70% required to pass

Exam fees are $66.00 for one exam or $116.00 for two exams (Business Management and one trade)

Testing is through PSI and approval is required
