Contractors License Overview
Home builders in New Jersey must be registered with the NJ Dept. of Community Affairs. Home improvement contractors must be registered with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. These registrations do not require passing an exam.
Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC/refrigeration licenses are issued by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. Applicants must submit paperwork with proof of required education and experience and then pass the required exam.
Commercial building contractors in New Jersey are regulated on the city/county level only. No state license is required.
