Contractors License Overview
- Montana only regulates electricians and plumbers at the state level. All other contracting is licensed on the city or county level.
- Electricians must apply for a Residential, Journeyman, or Master license before taking their exam. If a company wishes to be licensed as an Electrical Contractor in MT, they must have a licensed Master Electrician designated on their license.
- Plumbers must apply for a Journeyman or Master license before taking their exam. There is no separate Plumbing Contractor license required.

Montana Electrical
Montana Journeyman Electrician
Montana Journeyman Electrician applicants must be approved by the State and must pass the required examination.
Applicants must have either completed 4-years of apprenticeship in the electrical trade or be able to document (by 3rd party) 4-years or 8,000 hours of practical experience in wiring for light, heat, and power. Only a maximum of 4,000 hours in residential experience is allowed.
Montana Master Electrician
Applicants for the Montana Master Electrician license must be approved by the State and must pass the required examination.
There are Educational or Experience Requirements that must be met:
Electrical Engineering Degree (4yr) from accredited college or university with letters of verification from employers of 1 year experience in light, heat and power OR a copy of certificate or diploma verifying graduate of post secondary electrical trade school recognized by the Board, accompanied by letters of verification from employers of at least 4 years (8,000 hours) practical experience in the electrical field.
At least 5 years (10,000 hours) experience in planning, laying-out, and supervising at a journeyman level with an appropriate amount of commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional wiring.
